My first cardiac doc wanted to put me on statins. My cholesterol was a bit high in the moderate range. He didn’t volunteer so I asked about side effects. He said it would cause diabetes “but we can give you a drug for that.” I got myself a different doc and he said I’m not part of the 12% who cholesterol is a problem for.
I’ve lost so much respect for doctors since COVID and after looking into the statin shenanigans. Corruption is endemic in our whole system.
Thank you for all of your investigative work. I first learned about you when you wrote about the conflict of interest with the vaccine industry and Paul Offit. You are a gem!!
Medical corruption is certainly nothing new. What was new with Covid was the threat of losing your job if you didn't comply.
Cholesterol is vital for life. Don't trust anyone that is trying to reduce / eliminate it! Hormones, including Vitamin D, are made from cholesterol. If you have shockingly high cholesterol levels look for what is causing that and fix the actual problem.
I was naive pre-pandemic as to how we are taken advantage of financially when ill, and any time really (well baby visits) and especially grievous when vulnerable people, (i.e. elder abuse) are victimized.
Most recent visit to GP, first statement was "You're due for your flu shot", nope-no longer naive.
European standards for all the factors that prompt the usual pills in the United States, including statins, usually have much higher thresholds (e.g. liver etc.) Dr. Abramson‘s work has been updated by a Scottish Doctor who wrote “the clot thickens“. I still remember a Norwegian study that showed that older women with higher cholesterol lived longer! Cholesterol is a helper repair mechanism. He said it’s about the triglycerides. My take: walk around the block after every meal and eat garlic if you want to thin out your blood for whatever reason!
I've had a total cholesterol of 240-250ish for all of my adult years up to now at age 85. Luckily, my HDL cholesterol has consistently been 85-95. I'm a nurse whose primary care doctor tried very hard to convince me to start a statin regimen years ago and I refused because I was seeing articles re statins questionable value and their significant side affects.
Statins IMHO are a scam. Although they are a bit anti-inflammatory they hurt much more than they help. And when you compare them to what a slight change in diet, sleep, and exercise can accomplish-- then they register as "the worst possible option" - But doctors today live in a drug-only universe discarding supplements, food and diet, fasting, and exercise -- that often have effects orders of magnitude greater with no side affects. So sad. Note: I think drugs can be great. But until doctors include lifestyle in their decisions we will suffer the onslaught of bad drugs and miss the healing opportunities of other, often better, options.
Doc tried to put my husband on two statin shots a month. Yes, his total cholesterol is high, he’s a carnivore. He’s had a stroke. He has dementia, Alzheimer’s, and his front brain is shrinking.
His neurologist wanted to give him statins. I asked the neurologist if the brain needed the cholesterol?? Doc said the brain needed sugar too. I didn’t argue with the doctor. We took the script. Had it filled and threw them away.
I am against all militaries and all governments and you would be too if you were a normal human. But Israel's military and government speaks for its citizens even less than most militaries and governments.
I guess I'm not gonna expect you to understand basic logic today.
You are nothing but a gasliting pig ignorant terrorist loving type. Islam is a fraud & Iran, Hamas, Hezbolah & the rest arecall liars & murderers or mass murder supporters. There us Zero archeological evudence that MoHimMaD ever existed.
ISLAM now colonizes 22 countries & currently colonizing W. Europe, Australia, NZ, Canada & USA. Islam intends to exterminate Israel, a nation smaller than El Salvador.
There has never been any nation but Israel in the area of Israel. 'Palestinians' are frauds educated to be terrorists from birth by Hamas. There was never a country called Palestine, a derrogatory name given to the are by Roman conquerors.
You head is twisted & fed by meaningless foam from the mouths of warmongers & mass murderers.
Since his 20's my husband had very high cholesterol (think, 300's), so his doctors had him on high doses of statins. I think it was able to come down to the high 200s once or twice. He had a lot of muscle pain so went off of them after many years. He died from a heart attack about a year later. He was extremely fit and ate well, but he died at 60.
Now my youngest son (23) has high cholesterol, high LDL and high triglycerides. Like his dad, he is very fit, and about the same age his father started treatment.
Praying RFK Jr. can withstand the slings and arrows. I (WE) Really need to know more valid information about how to protect his young heart.
A prospective study of millions of Koreans found that all-cause mortality was minimized when total cholesterol was between 180 and 270, higher than current American guidelines.
The best predictive measure for cardiovascular disease based on the lipid panel is not total cholesterol or LDL, but rather triglycerides divided by HDL, which should be ideally under 2. I decreased my ratio by exercising more, and eating avocadoes daily.
Just listened to Sharyl's podcast on this. More quality journalism. My wife and I took my live in father off Statins when we noticed side effects. His doctor quickly agreed with our decision. My mom in a home with dementia was taken off statins with her doctor agreeing when we suggested this. I think more and more doctors are becoming aware of the issues you raise in your reports.
Thank you for all your work on this topic, Sharyl.
A good place for uncovering risks vs. benefits is thennt.com (The NNT [dot] com). The Number Needed to Treat, or NNT, is a concept of evidence-based medicine that integrates the absolute risk change seen from a treatment. Because relative change is often higher than absolute change, most studies report relative change -- in an attempt to capture shocking headlines.
Here is a quote about the questionable notion of using statins for primary prevention:
"With no mortality benefit, no reduction in serious illness, an approximately 1% chance of avoiding a nonfatal heart attack or stroke, a similar or greater chance of developing diabetes, and a one in 21 chance of muscle damage, it seems wiser to focus on lifestyle changes (such as adopting a Mediterranean diet, exercising, and not smoking) instead of cholesterol drugs in low-risk patients. These individuals should be informed of the known risks and benefits of statins, and the decision to start statin therapy should be shared by the patient and physician, rather than imposed by guidelines."
You were way ahead of the pack on this issue, as usual.
Statins have always failed elementary risk vs. benefit analysis, and interfering with a major biosynthetic pathway was clearly a ridiculous enterprise.

Know what our brains are mostly made of? Cholesterol.

Excess hunger cravings, bloating, dropsy, are really a sign of low hydration.
You need at least your weight (pounds) minus 64 as water (fresh lemon in it).
Check the hydration. If it is low you will have every disease in the book, beginning with sub clinical kidney failure.
Try healthy things like magnesium threonate and B12 (methylcobalamin) and water (Gerolsteiner). We *need* cholesterol.
Superb, as almost always!
Please rethink your defense of Israel's brutal military and government.
After you do, you are one huge step closer to being the perfect journalist, Ms. Atkisson.
Spoken like a perfect Nazi.
Good Lawd another radical lefty in the group they’re easy to spot
Good Lawd another radical righty in the group they’re easy to spot
Nah. Fantastic try though! Paid propagandist you are.
Nah. You are obviously the pig ignorant paid propagandist.
Lefty never wins an argument so they resort to name calling. Lefty radicals are too easy to spot
They should all be banished to that Hell hole BluSky

lol this dudes going batshit crazy now
There is no government that represents its people less than the Islamist theocracy in Iran.
Read about the Rape of Nanjing and then explain why we don't need military and government.
I assume you already have heard of the Holocaust.
The information you are missing is at
thenewamerican.com and
jbs.org
Americanism has been demonized & nearly forgotten precisely because it jas zero trust in government & military, as you profess.
Please rethink your defense of jihadists' brutal military and government.
